Should I accept a job that pays less than what I make now?

Should I accept a job that pays less than what I make now?
I'm 24, I'm Mexican, I live in Mexico. I have two jobs; I’m English teacher, I've been one since I was 18, and worked myself through different schools 'til working in the best paid university in my town. I'm also a medical document translator; one can't make more money than that translating in the medical field. Everyone says that for a 24 y/o single guy, I make a lot of money. However, I have zero experience in the business field, which was my major; I’ve always made a living from me speaking English. Over the years, I've had several jobs offers to work as a Buyer, but since I have no experience they can't offer me more money than what I already make. The last person who offered me a job pointed out that I reached the glass ceiling, no translator in my town makes more than what I make, and no school pays more than the one I work at. I was recommended to accept working as a buyer, and even if I made less now, I would eventually make more than what I make in this moment. Should I accept working for less?

The only time that you should accept work for less is if you were starting your own business. If you want to get experience in business, start your own. Nothing looks better on your resume than starting a business from scratch and making it successful. Keep your high-paying jobs. You are obviously very good at them.

You might want to consider another profession where you will gain experience in other areas than just English. The time will come when there will be a young buck finally turns 18 just like you did and will get hired, not based on experience, but because he/she is cheaper to hire and knows enough English to do the job. Remember, everyone can be replaced. So if you can afford it, then that job might be a pretty good job to take. Sure the money might be low, but what about the experience. That experience probably equals or exceeds your pay right now. Just something to think about.

Here's the deal. I have cousins who work in Mexico and they have secure jobs like you. They are not eager to switch anytime soon due to the instability of the job market. You are making a good living now. Also I would like to point out that the buyer-seller market is a very fickle thing with you potentially being able to make more in the end. But their are risks involved. Salaries over here in the US are not going up at the moment and the cost of living is increasing. Taking the job means that they pay you what you are already making. In future years it is up to them to decide whether or not they want to give you a raise? You might or might not make more. My advice from a business standpoint is too not take the offer up.

When it really comes down to it, it all depends on your happiness. If you will be happier but working at a lower rate..so be it...unless your imediate family will suffer because of the decrease then its better to make sure they are ok first before you.

I notice you don't mention if you are happy? If what you are doing makes you happy, and you make good money at it, why change? If, on the other hand, you are not happy and can afford to make less money, maybe you should try something new. Making less in a different field is acceptable, if you can afford it.
